Just days after being put in charge of Poland's Ministry of Internal Affairs and preparation for Poland's European Union accession, jovial former Prime Minister Jozef Oleksy this week gave a fresh and open admittance the country may behind in its preparations for the process. According to Oleksy, parliament still has to plough its way through 21 new acts and around 180 executive regulations in order to meet basic targets for preparation.
"We will only be approximately ready for accession," he admitted. The European Commission has repeatedly placed Poland among the worst performers in pre-accession adaptation. The biggest problem areas include agriculture, heavy industry and required legal changes. "We have to avoid the attitude that May 1 will arrive and things will work out somehow on their own," Oleksy said. "They will not."
